Always close the stove valve after cooking, not just turning off the flame at the knob.
Don't leave gas cooking unattended for long periods, especially with easily flammable oils.
Install a gas/smoke detector in the kitchen if possible, and test it periodically.
Keep flammable items (aerosols, alcohol-based cleaners) away from the stove and cylinder.
Teach everyone in the household, including older children, how to close the cylinder valve in an emergency.
If you suspect any fault, stop using the cylinder and review the "Smell Gas at Home" guide above.
